Cuetlaxochitl (Poinsettia) 

Euphorbia pulcherrima

Euphorbia is the type genus of the Spurge family, Euphorbiaceae

AKA Poinsettia, Cuetlaxochitl, K'alul wits, flor de Nochebuena, et al. 

Native to modern day Mexico and Central America, indigenous Nahuatl and Mayan peoples have been cultivating and using this plant for medicine, dye making, and as a symbol of cultural significance for millennia. In Nahuatl, Cuetlaxochitl means brilliant or living and dying flower, and the Mayan name K’alul wits means ember flower. Since European colonization of the Americas, its green foliage, winter blooms, and bright red flower bracts have become ubiquitous with the Christian holiday season. Poinsettia, its modern English name, is derived from the name of the man credited with introducing the plant to American cultivation in the mid 19th century, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (and slave holder) Joel Roberts Poinsett.
